Why Is This Worksheet Helpful?
Developing strong reading skills requires recognizing patterns in phonics, blending, and rhyming. All these skills combined with memorizing sight words helps children build a strong foundation of reading. While all kids learn differently, teaching with a combination of skills will help them discover how they learn best. Most kids will need, at a minimum, strong phonics or letter sounds skills. Once kids know letter sounds, they can learn to blend the sounds into words with additional practice. Activities that will also help build a strong foundation for basic reading skills include practice counting word syllables, finding the beginning, middle, and ending sounds in simple words, rhyming, and memorizing high frequency words.
